Advice For Those Working Towards Becoming A Superintendent

Superintendents play a pivotal role in both developing and enabling the vision of their respective school boards. Some of the key duties include (but are not limited to) reviewing and making decisions about the curricula within each school and the district as a whole, overseeing school budgets, assessing improving student performance and achievement, reviewing and revising academic policies, and more. Throughout this process, superintendents are called upon — often on a daily basis — to make difficult decisions, and to be a passionate and effective change agent focused on both short and long-term student success, as well as elevated teacher performance.

How Leaders Can Promote Racial Equality in the Workplace

The journey towards racial equality in the workplace — and in every other forum and facet of society — has moved significantly forward in the last several decades. However, despite some notable gains and achievements in this area, we are still a long way from embodying the aspirational vision posed by MLK, in which people are judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

To say that effective school leadership is merely important is a gross understatement: it is outright essential. Unfortunately, many schools across the country are experiencing this truth for all of the wrong reasons. Instead of working cohesively and collaboratively towards a clear and progressive vision, these schools are characterized by chronic academic under-achievement and disciplinary issues, internal conflict and strife, and severe operational inefficiencies. What’s more, the leadership deficit in these dysfunctional schools is not static. It grows bigger month after month, and year after year. As this happens, all stakeholders lose: students, teachers, administrators, and communities as-a-whole.
